Lesson Title:  Developmental of 21st Century Skills

National Educational Technology Standards

NETS-T:   
2.  Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills , and attitudes identified in the NETS-S.

Objectives

  • Students will explore their understanding of technology and 21st Century Skills both inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Students will use technology tools to enhance their learning, increase productivity and promote creativity.  
  • Students will use a variety of web tools to communicate information and ideas effectively. 
  • Students will understand the basics of digital citizenship and the digital elements.
  • Students will explore and understand one of the elements of digital citizenship in depth.

Lesson Overview 

Students will explore their 21st Century Skills using a variety of web 2.0 tools.  Students will learn the basics of digital citizenship and its elements.  They will explore one of the digital elements in depth and work collaboratively using one of the web tools introduced in this lesson (Padlet, Tagxedo, etc.), in creating a technology enhanced product, prepare publications and produce other creative works. 

Lesson Development

(Includes pre-assessment, lesson initiation, lesson development, closure and assessment)
Students will participate in an on-line Technology for Learning Survey to assess their understandings and interpretations on what is considered technology and how to use technology inside and outside of the classroom environment. 
Students will engage in discussion with the teacher on, “What is Technology?”
Teacher will introduce students to different 21st Century web tools including word cloud web tools such as Wordle and Tagxedo (teacher will model how to use these tools).  Teacher will introduce students to the web tool Padlet (teacher will model how to use this tool). 
Teacher will begin preparing students on becoming 21st Century Skills student and introduce what digital citizenship is.  Students will briefly explore the nine elements of digital citizenship.
Students will select an element to explore in depth and create a wall using Padlet focused on the element they chose. 
Teacher will incorporate the students’ padlet into the class Weebly web page where students will present their padlet to the class and present their digital element in details.
(This lesson will serve as a mini lesson and introduction to a future more in depth lesson of Digital Citizenship and the Elements of Digital Citizenship).
Students will take a Digital Citizenship on Socractive (this will serve as a post lesson assessment to this mini lesson and a pre-assessment to the proceeding lesson that will focus on digital citizenship and its elements more in depth).
Students will reflect on the web tools they used.
